Folate

New research shows men over the age of 60 with the highest folate, or folic acid, intake are 20 percent less likely to develop hearing loss, which supports findings from previous studies. Recommended dose» 1,000 mcg daily.

Niacin

Niacin, or vitamin B3, can improve circulation and reduce the dizziness associated with some ear disorders by dilating blood vessels and increasing blood flow. Recommended dose» 35 mg is the dietary reference intake; however, to affect circulation, anywhere from 50–3,000 mg per day may be necessary. Flushing and itching are common side effects for doses greater than 100 mg daily and may limit the amount a person can tolerate, so check with your health care provider before taking.

Zinc

This trace mineral can help reduce symptoms of tinnitus, which causes ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the ears and is one of the most common hearing conditions, affecting about 17 percent of the general population and 33 percent of the elderly. Recommended dose» For tinnitus, take 34–68 mg per day, for two months.
