Adrenal builders Because poor adrenal function is common in women once they hit their 30s and 40s, consider herbs that target healthier functioning of these glands. Men can take these herbs, too. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). An effective adrenal tonic. Not recommended during pregnancy. (150–300 mg/day) B vitamins (especially B5 and B6). Boost overall energy and health. Found naturally in brown rice and other whole grains. (25–100 mg/day B-complex, plus 250–1,000 mg/day B5) Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea). Increases physical endurance and combats stress. No known side effects. (100–200 mg/day) Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). An adaptogenic herb that promotes healthy adrenal functioning. Do not take if you suffer from hypertension. (75–150 mg/day) Vitamin C. Promotes overall health, including that of the adrenals. Abundant in citrus fruits. Reduce dose if stools become loose. (1,000 mg, 3x/day) Circulation enhancers Supplements that improve overall circulation in the body may rev up your libido because flow to the genital organs will also improve. Arginine. An amino acid that causes blood vessels to dilate, sending more blood to the sex organs; abundant in nuts and seeds. Do not take if you have a history of oral or genital herpes. (750–1,500 mg/day) Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba). Begin with 120 mg and work up to 240 mg daily. Exercise caution if you take blood thinners or if gastrointestinal upset occurs. (120–240 mg/day)
